A Class Proposal

I think we need a class on death...a class that examines primarily the scientific processes of it.  So far in my biology classes we talk a lot about building of proteins that compose a living organism, I am not so far advanced yet that we talk about abnormal physiology, but there is little referring to the break down of what we understand as an entire organism.  I cannot help but think that the idea is avoided.  I would love to see a class offered on the mechanisms of death.  We have all kinds of rhetoric debating "when does life begin?"  I would love to hear a discussion on "when does death begin?"  (Although probably neither question makes sense in scientific terms, because both are continuous, inseparable processes).  I think that we as a society would advance if we could peer as honestly into death as we have the processes of life.  The study of life has deflated our hubristic view of ourselves as something separate from the world that bore us, maybe that has hurt us too much that some people still refuse to believe it, and pushing further would mean conceding more of that egotistic view of ourselves.  Of course we are scared, because we don't want to lose that sense of importance.  But we can't be scared, because we can't escape it.  Our denial is killing us and more, everything around us.
